Front Lights Installation

Enhanced front auxiliary lighting can add a distinctive look, particularly at night. This page describes the installation of LED front flush mounts, headlight pod, and mirror hole cover LED's. The front flush mounts and headlight pod LED are from Rabeet of the Owners Association. Unfortunately, these flush mounts and headlight pods are no longer being made. The mirror hole covers are modified Rizoma covers.

Here are the components for one side of the front. The Bosch relay is used to permit all the LED's to be used as running lights and some of them as turn signals.

Replacing stock lights with LED's will cause a 'fast flashing' problem with the turn signals. The stock turn signal flasher is designed to flash rapidly when it senses a reduced electrical load thus informing the rider that a turn signal bulb has gone out. LED's use much less current than incandescent light bulbs and cause that rapid flashing. This problem can be solved with the installation of an aftermarket turn signal flasher such as the Tridon EP-37.

To install these LED's you must remove the stock front turn signal lights. The first step is to remove the left and right fairing inserts. These pictures illustrate the procedure for the removal of the right fairing insert. These show the previously installed clear flush mount in place.

Next, detach the stock lights from the fairing.

Rabeet's Flush Mounts:

These replace and are a substantial enhancement over the Lockhart-Phillips flushmounts I had previously installed. The installation of these little jewels was made possible when I replaced the previous fairing where I had trimmed the lip. The lights have thirteen LED's electrically wired as one group of eight and one group of five. You can select, with how you wire them, which serve as running lights and which serve as turn signals. I wired them (see section on connecting wires below) such that they are all on as running lights and the group of eight flashes as a turn signal.

The lights come with installation instructions and they are very easy to install. There is nothing I can add to those instructions.

Rabeet's Headlight Pod LED's:

As with the flush mounts these are electrically wired in two groups of LED's, one with four and one with three. Again, you can select which serve as running lights and which serve as turn signals. I wired them (see section on connecting wires below) such that they are all on as running lights and the group of four flashes as a turn signal.

When I installed these (for the second time) I had the luxury of having the headlight assembly detached from the bike. That made drilling the holes a bit easier.

To install the light assembly:

  1. Push Light Through Grommet
  2. Insert Grommet
  3. Carefully Pull the Light Back Through the Grommet
  4. Finger Tighten the Retaining Nut

Mirror Hole Covers With LED's:

The Rizoma mirror hole covers can be center drilled with a 5/16" hole to accept an LED. A larger countersunk hole underneath is drilled part way to accept the retaining nut. I had this done by a professional machine shop. The LED selected has an integrated resistor so current limiting is not a problem. The LED installs in the LED holder and the wiring is soldered onto the terminals. The slightly longer wire on the LED is the anode or the positive side, the shorter is the cathode or the negative side. The wiring was twisted for strength and 1/4" rubber tubing used to protect the wires. Electrical tape seals the tubing at the hole cover end.

Holes must be drilled in the fairing stay between the two mirror holes on each side to thread the electrical connections for the LED's. The rubber isolator is put in place and a hole cover is temporarily installed as a guide for the drill. A 1/4" hole is sufficient.

Thread the LED wires first through the rubber isolators then through the hole drilled in the fairing stay. A small flat blade screwdriver can be used to assist in pushing the bullet connectors and rubber tubing through. Attach the hole covers to the fairing stay using the nuts and washers.

Fabricate and Install Connecting Wires:

At left just below is the wiring diagram that shows the connections I used. This particular configuration uses all LED's as ON for running lights then uses some of them switched OFF when the turn signal is engaged. Eight LED's in the flush mount switch OFF when the turn signal electrical pulse is sensed. Similarly, four LED's in the headlight pod are switched OFF and the mirror hole cover LED is turned OFF. The numbers on the image of the wiring connectors correspond to the numbers on the wiring diagram. I used thin gauge wires and .156 diameter bullet connectors to match the stock wiring. Note which are male and which are female bullet connectors. One set of these connectors are needed for the right side lights and another set for the left side.
