Tridon EP37 Flasher Relay Installation

The Tridon EP37 Flasher Relay will flash at a constant rate regardless of the load that is placed on it. The stock flasher relay will cause a rapid flash of the turn signals when the load is decreased as an indication that there is a faulty bulb. This causes a problem when installing aftermarket LED turn signals. LED's have much less current draw than bulbs and hence they will exhibit the rapid flashing. This relay cures that problem.

The Tridon EP37 is, unfortunately, very difficult to find. The price is about $18.00 plus shipping.

There is a report that the Federal Mogul (Wagner Lighting Division) Electronic Flasher Relay #7216 is a direct replacement for Tridon's EP37 relay. Its ratings are 12VDC, 16 lamp, 2 terminal. It reportedly flashes more rapidly than the Tridon, 90 flashes per minute rather than about 60 for the Tridon. The first time only delay may also be a bit less. Its availability is also much greater. Check out Jon's Page for more on this. The Wagner relay is also listed as a NAPA Auto Parts part number NFL7216, $19.49.

Grote also offers a constant rate flasher, part number 44891, available at NAPA as well. This flasher, however, has an extra ground lead that must be spliced into the bike's wiring.

To install the EP37:

  • Remove seat.
  • Disconnect and Remove Stock Flasher.

  • Make the Connecting Wires. This Way Stock Wiring is Not Altered.
  • I Cut Some Male Spade Connectors in Half Lengthwise to Fit in the Stock Connector. A Trip to the Electronics Parts Store to Find Proper Connectors Would Have Yielded a More Elegant Solution But I Had These Lying Around.
  • Attach Connecting Wires, Supplied Metal Bracket, and Rubber Holder from Stock Flasher to EP37.

  • Attach Connecting Wires to Stock Wiring Connector.
  • Test the Turn Signals.
  • Install the EP37.
  • Test the Turn Signals Again.

The EP37 flashes slightly more slowly than the stock relay. There is a slight delay before flashing the first time it is actuated. Subsequent activations do not exhibit this delay.
